(GRS-732) Experimental investigations of a discontinuous free jet resulting from the impact of a shaped charge during the transport of nuclear material

As part of an investigation into possible risk scenarios associated with the transport of nuclear material, this project involved an experimental study of a transient, particle-laden gas-free jet resulting from the impact of anti-tank weapons with shaped charges on transport and storage containers. To this end, experimental setups were constructed in collaboration with the Chair of Fluid Mechanics at the Faculty of Bio- and Chemical Engineering in the laboratories of the Technical University of Dortmund, and experiments were carried out with varying test parameters.

A total of over 300 individual experiments were carried out with five variations in the experimental parameters, using various measurement techniques allowing both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results enable conclusions to be drawn regarding the outflow behaviour, the velocity field and the influence of the particles on a transient particle-laden free jet.

This report documents that the experiments were carried out in a verifiable and reproducible manner. Analytical models are presented which were developed on the basis of the experimental data and can be used to calculate the time-dependent and particle-size-dependent propagation of the free jet. Furthermore, the effects of parameter variations and the impact of a small aperture located within the propagation region are analysed. In addition, an overview of the measurement results is provided to support the optimisation and validation of numerical models in follow-up projects.
