Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) gGmbH has been Germany's central expert organisation in the field of nuclear safety since 1977.

At our headquarters in Cologne and our locations in Berlin, Braunschweig and Garching near Munich, our experts carry out research, development and assessments in the following fields:

Customers and financing

GRS is a non-profit organisation. It is financed mainly by carrying out publicly funded research projects and by providing expert opinions. 
The main customers or funders of GRS are

  • the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV),
  • the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Actions (BMWK),
  • the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF),
  • the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) and
  • the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). 

Furthermore, GRS works on orders from state authorities and the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung, BGE). The most important international customers are the European Commission and nuclear regulatory authorities of various countries.

Shareholders and administrative bodies

46% of GRS are owned by the Federal Republic of Germany, another 46% by the Technische Überwachungsvereine (TÜV). The Länder of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria hold 4% of the shares each.

The administrative bodies of GRS are the General Assembly, the Supervisory Board, and its General Management. Chairperson of the Supervisory Board is Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. Jan-Niclas Gesenhues.

Quality management 

GRS has been certified according to ISO 9001:2015 since 1997 (currently DIN ISO EN 9001:2015). Quality management covers all processes within the company and is part of GRS's integrated management system, which is audited annually. In addition, the Geoscientific Laboratory of GRS is accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. 

IT and information security

The security of our corporate data, IT systems and the information provided to us by customers and partners is a top priority for us and a central component of all our business processes. GRS's information security management system is certified according to ISO/IEC 27001:2013. Since 2013, GRS has been participating in the Alliance for Cyber Security of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).
