Iodine thyroid blocking (ITB)
Iodine thyroid blocking (ITB) is a preventive protective measure taken by the disaster control authorities in the event of a nuclear emergency. This involves distributing and encouraging people to take high-dose potassium iodide tablets, more simply known as iodine tablets. By taking these, the thyroid gland is saturated with stable, i.e. non-radioactive iodine through the absorption of the active ingredient.
This prevents the released radioactive iodine-131 from accumulating in the thyroid gland through inhalation. In order for ITB to be effective in the human metabolism, it is important to take the tablets at the exact time specified by the disaster control authorities.
Taking high-dose iodine tablets may be associated with health risks and side effects. For example, the age of people plays an important role here. The instructions of the disaster control authorities regarding the groups of people who should take the tablets should therefore be followed.
