The EUROSAFE Forum 2013 focuses on the safe nuclear waste management

The issue of the safe nuclear waste management is the focus of this year’s EUROSAFE Forum taking place on 4th and 5th November 2013 in Cologne. More than 350 representatives of scientific-technical expert and research organisations, authorities, the nuclear industry and non-governmental organisations from Germany and abroad are expected to convene at Gürzenich in Cologne.

Scientific, technical, ecological and socioeconomical criteria as well as the involvement of the general public are important factors in the nuclear waste management.
The first day’s plenary lectures give an insight into the different perspectives of actors working on the nuclear waste management issue. William C. Ostendorff, Commissioner of the US NRC and Pierre-Franck Chevet, President of the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) report on the part of the supervisory and licensing authorities. The Swiss NAGRA on the part of the operators, GRS as a Technical Safety Organisation (TSO) and a representative of a Finnish municipality report on their experiences. During the seminars on the second day, members of the TSO Network ETSON (European Technical Safety Organisations Network) present current projects, among others, on the safety of nuclear power plants, their decommissioning and dismantling and on the radiation protection.

For the first time, the ETSON award is granted within the EUROSAFE Forum. The award is granted by the European TSO Network ETSON and honours scientific-technical work in the field of nuclear safety which sets new standards in science and technology.

What is the EUROSAFE initiative?

The EUROSAFE initiative is an international network for the discussion of safety-related issues in the nuclear field. It consists of representatives of several national licensing and supervisory authorities and their TSOs. One element of the initiative is the EUROSAFE Forum as an international conference for nuclear safety. Each year since 1999, GRS organises the EUROSAFE Forum together with the technical safety organisations of France (IRSN) and Belgium (BelV). Furthermore, the specialist magazine “EUROSAFE Tribune” is published by the EUROSAFE initiative on a semi-annual basis. The issue of the current edition 24 is “Stress tests for enhancing nuclear safety“.
