In the night of 26 April 1986, the most severe accident worldwide that ever hit civil nuclear power generation occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The explosion in the RBMK-type reactor no. 4 and the subsequent fire in the reactor core lead to a considerable release of radioactive materials into the environment and to fuel debris of the reactor core being thrown out into the area surrounding the power plant.
