Geothermal energy: Renewable energy from terrestrial heat

Geothermal power plants utilise the heat from the earth's interior to generate energy in the form of electricity and heat. This is possible at temperatures of as low as 100 degrees Celsius. GRS is investigating how geothermal power plants can be operated safely and reliably.

Overall maintenance inspection

An overall maintenance inspection refers to the scheduled shutdown of a nuclear power plant for the inspection, maintenance and modernisation of parts of the plant. Various tasks are carried out during an overall maintenance inspection.

Fuel assembly (PWR)

Fuel assemblies contain the nuclear fuel with which a nuclear power plant is operated. Depending on the reactor type, fuel assemblies differ in their structure.

Fukushima nuclear accident

In 2011, the most severe nuclear accident since Chernobyl occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant site in Japan. The accident was classified at the highest level of the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES).

Nuclear energy worldwide 2024
15.02.2024

What happened last year in the field of nuclear energy? What developments can be observed internationally? The following overview shows the situation broken down by continent (Europe, America, Asia and Africa). Australia/Oceania is not included, as no nuclear power plants are operated there. After a brief summary, those countries are presented for each continent which either operate reactors or which are planning to start or are already building NPPs.

Radioactive materials in food: Researchers determine consumption levels of food groups of radiological interest
01.01.2021 - 31.12.2022

Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins and water are among the nutrients that the human metabolism needs to live. Natural or artificial radioactive materials also find their way into food in various ways. In order to calculate the radiation dose, the quantities of certain food consumed are used. Researchers at GRS have analysed consumption studies and recorded the quantities of different food groups consumed in Germany according to region and age.
