The preferred option for the long-term management of high level and long-lived radio-active waste is disposal in deep geological formations. The realization of such disposal concepts is based on both technical feasibility and long term safety. The latter requires a wide range of technical and scientific data for assessing the long term performance of disposal systems and sites.
